Although today the psychological problems derived from pregnancy and childbirth are scientifically well known and treated, this paper attempts to analyze how these were addressed in Spain in the Early Modern period. In order to carry it out, we start from the concept of melancholy according to medical and theological treatises of 16th and 17th centuries, and we study the examples contained in a source of great interest, such as the lives of saints and books of miracles published in Spanish in that period. This source reveals to us how the physical and psychological needs of women were sought through consolation and empathy.
